Select Peaks of Greater Yellowstone:
A Mountaineering History and Guide
This historical guidebook to the peaks of Greater Yellowstone is a completely rewritten second edition of Thomas Turiano's book from 2003. I started with the layout of the first edition and converted it from black and white to full color and updated all the fonts. I worked together with Thomas as the book was rewritten and edited to lay out the hundreds of images, captions, and chapter text in an appealing design while maintaining a logical order and pairing between text and images. The 630-page tome contains 13 chapters plus notes, bibliography, and index.
On the cover, spot UV coating was used on the word "Peaks" in the title and on the inset historical images.
When designing the cover, we decided on a distinctly different color scheme from the first edition, which was blue, to help distinguish the two editions when sitting on a shelf. The cover photo and design is also new.
Each chapter begins with a full-page map (these were designed by the author), a photo, and a summary of the region or mountain range. It continues with detailed history and information about each peak in the region.
I designed historical deep-dives to be distinguished from the rest of the text with a blue border. The discussion of each peak concludes with ascent details such as elevation, distance, and time for ascent. Many photos include overlays tracing the possible ascent paths. Getting the placement of these photos correct was particularly important.
From the client:
"Maria Johnson worked with me for a couple years on a 630-page historical guidebook book project with 640 photos, 600 route overlays, 20 maps, and multitudes of page layouts. I appreciate Maria so much for the care she took with my project, her fast high-quality work ethic, and her amazing attention to detail. Also, her prompt, clear, calm, tender, and professional communication was essential in offsetting my occasional panic attacks. If you're looking for a design and layout professional, I cannot imagine someone better to work with than Maria." —Thomas Turiano
